John Day Fossil Beds – Painted Hills Unit

John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is just so special it made the list twice—this time for the iconic Painted Hills Unit located in Wheeler County. Marked by a vivid array of red, tan, orange, and black stripes that tell the story of a changing climate, the Painted Hills change hues based on light, moisture levels, and seasons. And hidden among the stunning tapestry of colors lies a world class record of plant and animal evolution, with some leaf fossils dating back 40 million years. Take a hike around this stunning backdrop, but please stay on the trails and don't collect any fossils.
