Shipwreck of the Peter Iredale

In 1906, the Peter Iredale, a four-masted English ship, ran ashore on the Clatsop Spit en route to Portland. Miraculously, all 27 crew members (and two stowaways) survived the wreck and the ship's hull was left intact. But by the time the weather cleared up enough to tow the ship back out to sea, the ship was already embedded in the sand and has remained there ever since. Visitors to Clatsop County's Fort Stevens State Park can still see the century-old ghostly remains of the Iredale's bow and ribs on the beach.
